what i do

beth kantrowitz

INDEPENDENT curator

I am an independent curator representing  emerging and mid-career, contemporary artists primarily from the Northeast.

INDEPENDENT CURATOR
Most people know me as the Co-Director of Drive-by Projects in Watertown, MA and previously the acclaimed Allston Skirt Gallery in Boston.  I have 20+ years of experience with artists working in all media in Boston and beyond. This gives me a unique perspective on the arts community - inspiring me to curate thought-provoking exhibitions at galleries and unusual venues.

Let's work together to find the perfect work of art for your home or office. I will put all of my resources together to define, search out and capture your 'art crushes'. Drawing on my relationships with artists, other curators and dealers, I can handle all aspects of the transaction - identify under-valued artists and emerging talent, sending images or arranging studio visits, negotiating terms and discounts – all the way to framing and professional installation.

“Timber”
 Oil pastel on Masonite pegboard
19” x 29.25”
About Keith’s work:
Before the bald eagle, the timber rattlesnake symbolized colonial unity. Popularized by Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die,” it embodied an American character defined by restraint: peaceful until provoked, always providing fair warning. In Timber, I use this icon to protest our departure from those ethics. The “rattle” of principled warning has been replaced by unprovoked aggression, violating the trust of global allies. The snake navigates a cold, geometric labyrinth—a rigid maze reflecting the systematic dismantling of diplomacy. The title serves as a logger’s cry; it warns that as the pillars of international trust snap, the resulting crash will leave our landscape unrecognizable. At the nation’s 250th anniversary, Timber is a visual wake up call.

About Keith’s work. What inspires him to create work that relates to folk art:
Keith Gamache was raised in rural Massachusetts, and received his formal education in New York and Vermont. He is a big fan of Folk Art traditions such as Pennsylvania Dutch Hex signs, early Modernists such as Mondrian, as well as the contemporary text based paintings by Robert Indiana.

About Keith’s process:
His process is both personal and imperfect. It begins with using existing and self-imposed rules that allow the work to get started before turning over to painterly concerns of color, line, shape, and texture. By creating and breaking rules, he creates abstract shapes that are juxtaposed with text and the occasional representational image.
