The Blue of Distance at Kingston Gallery in Boston, MA, was curated by beth kantrowitz, independent
curator and art consultant of bkprojects + co-director Drive-By Projects.
January 2 – February 1, 2026
The concept of the exhibition, chosen by gallery members, was inspired by the essay, The Blue of Distance, by Rebecca Solnit.
“For many years, I have been moved by the blue at the far edge of what can be seen, that color of horizons, of remote mountain ranges, of anything far away. The color of that distance is the color of an emotion, the color of solitude and of desire, the color of there seen from here, the color of where you are not. And the color of where you can never go. For the blue is not in the place those miles away at the horizon, but in the atmospheric distance between you and the mountains. ‘Longing,’ says the poet Robert Hass, ‘because desire is full of endless distances.’ Blue is the color of longing for the distances you never arrive in, for the blue world.”
— Rebecca Solnit
Kingston Gallery invited beth kantrowitz to curate the group show. 304 submissions were received from all over the world.
“While reviewing the submissions for the exhibition, I found myself considering artwork that
embodies longing, desire, light, hope, discomfort, and beauty. It was impossible not to consider
the conditions and events happening in our country and around the world, and how the selected
art responds to those events. I hope the exhibition offers a space for viewers to contemplate
both their personal lives and the broader world.”
