You may not have time to stop in, but there's always time to cruise by Drive-By. Located at 81 Spring Street in Watertown, MA, Drive-By is a small but innovative space, exhibiting artists' work in its two storefront windows and a small exhibition space, and also from its flat files. We are pleased to announce our inaugural exhibition, Two Guys from Providence: Sculpture by Jerry Mischak, Paintings by Kevin Morosini.

Jerry Mischak's Providence, RI studio is a vast garage filled with quirky, duct tape wrapped constructions in various stages of completion. Kevin Morosini works in a small, tightly organized room in his Providence loft. His colorful, constructed, text paintings fill the walls and are fastidiously stacked in corners. Transported from their Providence studios, Mischak's sculptures (in the windows) and Morosini's paintings (on the walls) strike up an animated exchange in Drive-By's new space.

Although Jerry Mischak's materials are humble, man made, and everyday (duct tape, scrap wood, cast-off furniture, rope, found objects, Styrofoam, etc.), the objects he creates from them are exotically organic. Viewed in his studio, they appear intertwined in a jungle-like fashion, only to emerge on completion as unique pieces. One senses that the only control mechanism here is Mischak's formidable imagination.

Kevin Morosini's shaped works are constructed from painted squares and rectangles. They seem to spring from the same organizing principle that arranges his studio, until one reads the hand-lettered text. Now, cast adrift to contemplate Morosini's playful, ingenuously hip mindset, the viewer witnesses their transformation from puzzle-like, abstract color studies into moving visual poems.

Jerry Mischak lives and works in Providence Rhode Island. He is Senior Critic at Rhode Island School of Design and Visiting Scholar at Brown University. He has exhibited his work extensively both nationally and internationally, with recent exhibitions at the Palmer Museum at Penn State University, Islip Art Museum, Pavel Zoubok Gallery and Jim Kempner Fine Art in New York. Mischak is also a recipient of the Howard Foundation Fellowship and Rhode Island State Council of the Arts Fellowship.
